About Champion Energy

Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Houston, Champion Energy is one of the few energy providers in the industry that has never been affiliated with a utility company. While the company expanded its retail energy to the northeastern states, the company remains Texas-centric; serving about 2.5 million customers most of which are in Texas. In 2015, Champion Energy joined Houston-based Calpine Corporation, the largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources in the United States.

Champion Energy's long-standing reputation for customer satisfaction has earned it several consecutive J.D. Power "Highest in Residential Customer Satisfaction with Retail Electric Service" awards. Texas Electricity Ratings ranks Champion Energy as one of its Gold Tier Providers. Both Calpine and Champion Energy help the Texas communities they serve through donations to food banks and charities across the state. Champion Energy is also well respected for providing annual scholarships to Texas high school seniors seeking to attend a Texas college program.

Why is my electricity rate higher than when I signed up?

The rate you see when you sign up is the average rate at that exact amount of usage in one billing cycle.

Some companies try to game the system by applying bill credits between certain usage thresholds. It works great if you are within the margins, but as soon as you leave that band you no longer get that bill credit and your rate per kWh can double. The PUC only requires that companies disclose their average rates at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWhs. Companies can get around this by giving you a $50 bill credit if you use between 1000 and 2000 kWhs per billing cycle.

The only way to really know what you're getting into is to read your EFL. A 10¢ rate at all usage amounts may end up being cheaper than that 8¢ rate at 1,000 kWh!

Best Deals to Save on Your Dallas Electric Bill

Shop now to get the best savings on your Dallas electricity. Higher summer energy rates mean higher summer energy bills!
Summer rates could be higher! Now's the best time to shop to lock in the best savings on your Dallas electric bill!

With electricity rates on the rise and likely to get higher this summer, finding a cheap electric plan in Dallas isn’t easy. But, you’ve still got good options during the spring. These 12-month plans give you the best electric bill savings in Dallas right now. And here’s what you need to know before you switch to a cheaper electricity provider.

What Is the Cheapest Electric Bill in Dallas Right Now?

Free Weekends-12 by Champion Energy Services offers the best savings on your monthly electric bill in Dallas. This 12-month plan is a free weekends plan, which means that you’re only paying for energy usage on weekdays between Sunday at 11:59 PM and Friday at 12:00 AM. You won’t be charged for usage on the weekend.

During the paid period you’ll be charged 12.5 cents per kWh and TDU charges. If your average usage is 1000 kWh every month, your estimated monthly bill with this plan will be $118.

Since 70% of your usage occurs during the week, how much a weekend plan benefits you depends on your household’s habits. Free Weekends 12 also comes with a cash-back program. You’ll get 5% of your usage during the paid period applied as a credit to your next month’s bill.

The Best Electric Bill Savings in Dallas

Come & Take It 12 from Energy Texas has a cheap electric rate of 12.3 cents. This includes the base charge, the delivery charge, and the 7.57 cents per kWh energy charge. With average usage, this brings your estimated monthly bill to only $123.

Just like Come & Take It 12, Chariot Energy’s Solarize 12 also has an estimated monthly bill of $123 for 1000 kWh usage. However, the energy charge for this plan is slightly higher at 8.05 cents per kWh. The reason why it’s the same estimated electric bill is that Solarize 12 doesn’t have a base charge.

If your usage is less than 1000 kWh every month, Solarize 12 will give you a cheaper electric bill. However, if you use more than 1000 kWh, Come & Take It will get you better savings on your bill.

Eagle 12 from TriEagle Energy is only slightly higher at a $127 bill estimate. The 12.2 cents per kWh energy charge in this plan already includes the delivery charge, but it doesn’t include the $4.95 base charge.

What Happens at the End of Your Contract?

Your provider will send you a renewal notice before the end of your contract to tell you what your options are. If you don’t renew before your contract ends, they’ll most likely move you to their default renewal product. This is usually a month-to-month plan, which can be more expensive than a fixed-rate plan.

That’s why shopping for a cheap electric provider in the Oncor service area before your contract end is a great idea.

Best Free Weekend Houston Electricity

What’s Not To Love With Free Weekend Houston Electricity?

Learn more about these free weekend electric plans in Houston and how you could actually save money.
If you can shift your highest energy use to when it cost less, then you could save more on your monthly bills. We've sort through and found the best free weekend plans in Houston.

Getting something for free always feels great, but sometimes there’s a nagging sensation that what’s free isn’t always free. With free weekends electricity, there’s an inherent trade-off. You pay more for weekday electricity in exchange for cheaper weekend electricity. Free weekend Houston electricity means you don’t have to pay retail energy charges for electricity you consume over the weekend. But you do still have to pay CenterPoint Energy utility charges.

These plans are great for people who can shift their energy consumption. Say you only do laundry once a week. If you do it on Saturday instead of Thursday, you can save money on that energy consumption. Or perhaps your home is empty during the normal work week, but your house is filled on the weekends. In that case, a free weekend Houston electricity plan could be great for you.

Free Weekend Houston Electricity From Pulse Power

The best free weekend Houston electricity plan available right now is the Free Energy Weekends 36 plan from Pulse Power. This three-year plan offers power without retail charges from 8 p.m. on Friday to 5:59 a.m. on Monday. With such a generous definition of weekend hours, Pulse Power estimates customers use 40% of their power in the free electricity window.

This plan’s $123 average bill is not the lowest among free weekend plans. However, the Friday and Monday hours offer customers extra time to push their consumption to times when they save money. If you forget to run your dishwasher Sunday night, you have time to get in a quick cycle before 6 a.m. on Monday. The plan's advertised rate is 12.2 cents.

Pulse Power also offers 24-month and 12-month versions of this plan. Unfortunately, those plans have slightly higher prices. Therefore, the 36-month plan is the best option from this retail electricity provider.

Lowest Average Bill For Free Weekends

The cheapest free weekends plan is the Free Weekends-12 plan from Champion Energy Services. Running only the 48-hour period of Saturday and Sunday, this plan’s free window is 10 hours per week shorter than the Pulse Power plan. This means customers tend to use only 30% of their consumption during the free weekend hours. But the plan’s average bill is $120 because the weekday rate (12.5 cents) is significantly lower than the Pulse Power plan (13.3 cents). The Champion plan's advertised rate is 13.0 cents.

So the choice you’re left with is whether you want longer free hours with a higher weekday price or shorter free hours with a lower weekday price. Your decision depends on what you predict your energy consumption pattern will be. Can you cram your high power consumption activities into Saturday and Sunday? Or do you need a little wiggle room on Friday night and early Monday morning? Either way, you could save some money.

Free Weekends and More

The best place to shop for Houston power is https://www.texaselectricityratings.com/electricity-rates. It doesn't matter whether you want a free weekend plan or something completely different. You can find just the right plan to suit your power consumption needs.
